Not only is August’s birthstone beautiful and, dare I say, cheerful? Peridot has so many amazing uses, as well! So if you or a friend has a birthday in August, here are some things you might want to know about peridot, as well as a curated gift collection.
August Birthstone: Peridot
Although the shade may vary (depending how much iron is in each piece) on the Peridot is actually one of the few birthstones that only comes in one color: a cheerful light-medium green – much like the colors of the month, as summer turns to fall in the Northern hemisphere. Another fun fact: Peridot is one of only two gems that are formed in molten rock of the upper mantle (not the Earth’s crust like other gems) and brought to the surface by the powerful forces of earthquakes and volcanoes. Diamonds are the only other gem formed this way!
Probably the world’s leading expert in crystals and stones (after all, she wrote the Encyclopedia of Crystals), Judy Hall says to use Peridot to “Throw away your baggage, let go your conditioning and open yourself up to the infinite possibilities that surround you. This stone facilitates detaching yourself from outside influences, looking to your own higher energies for guidance. It teaches you how to set, and achieve goals, rather than striving for perfection and shows you the value of ‘mistakes’ that are really learning experiences.” [source]
